Materials and duration 1.2

Questioning magic, illusion and the idea of the physical versus the virtual, Materials and duration 1.2 is a development of artist, Heather Lander’s award-winning work from her 2015 G.S.A. MFA Degree Show.

Playing with our perceptions of space, this imaginative video installation moves between light and dark, silence and sound to challenge our understanding of physicality and its perpetual movement through time. Featuring commissioned orchestral compositions from sound artist and musician Pete Sach, the experience is heightened through intermittent bursts of music that at times overwhelm the room or are heard as distant reverberations.

Heather Lander’s practice began with painting and in recent years has evolved into sculpture and video installation during her MFA at Glasgow School of Art, where Materials and duration 1.1 was awarded the Bram Stoker Prize for most imaginative artwork in 2015. In March 2016, Cryptic facilitated an artist residency for Lander at Cove Park, Argyll & Bute. This time was used to further develop and refine Materials and duration from 1.1 to 1.2. Notable recent shows include Materialia with Simon Harlow at The Briggait as part of Glasgow International 2016.
